Hello,

I need advice.  I am purchasing a house that is missing some of the supply piping (vandals took it for scrap value).  I intend to replace all of the supply plumbing and want to switch to PEX.

I know the crimp and expansion methods of connections have been around and are both reliable.  My question is which is better for a novice with respect to:

1. Idiot proof -- with which method am I less likely to make mistakes?
2. Availability of connection products -- is one more universal in terms of what connections products are available?

I am not concerned about the cost of the expansion/crimp tool.  I am more concerned about doing the job right so that I don't have a leak 2 months after I close up the walls.

I appreciate your help.

Agno,

Both methods are fairly idiot-proof.  As far as availibility, the copper crimp system is much easier to locate fittings and tools.  As far as the best system - I would have to say that Rehau has the best connection system on the market (at least from what I've seen out there).  As far as I know, Rehau will only sell their proprietary tools to licensed professionals and I believe they even require a training certification.  The system is very simple to use however.  Occasionally, you can find one on eBay - but be prepared to pay between $500 to $700 for the tool kit.  I have not yet located a source for the Rehau fittings online (we are currently working to remedy that).  Check out the link below from Taunton Press.  The Rehau connection system is shown in that video and you can judge for yourself.  Hope this helps.
