Well, I did it and it doesn't leak but, of course, YMMV. the 1" Tee,which was the incoming water's distribution point, swiveled with the sort of snugness that was certainly reassuring. Cutting the copper clamp off the stub was slow work as I didn't want to cut into the serrations on the fitting. A dremel type tool would have been good to release the copper crimp. Or the PEX tool, of course. The PEX tubing had also taken a set, and while the stub end turned freely, I couln't pull it off the fitting until I scored the Pex nearly down to the brass serrations.
Speaking of PEX tools, I rented the 1" crimper from the Home Depot Tool rental, after getting danced around by a couple of Standard Plumbing branches. "Yes, we rent them for a full price deposit, which you get all but 10 bucks back when you return it--but this branch don't have one--they have two up the road 20 miles." Up the road 20 miles--"we don't rent them anymore because nobody brings them back". Well, jeez, who cares if you are getting a full price deposit! At least get on the same page!
I ordered my water softener from Sam's Club, a 35,000 grain unit made by GE. My friend got one 3 weeks ago for $365, but now they are $399. part # 909591. The installation manual was available, on line, so I was able to rough in the service. It comes with a bypass valve, set up for either 1", or 3/4", using bushings provided.
So goes the battle!
